10 Years of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House: Inaugural Writers Residency

As part of the 10-year anniversary of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House (EGH) opening to the public we will deliver an inaugural young writers’ residency project that will engage a younger, more diverse audience and help to develop public understanding and awareness of the cultural value of the building and the writer. Working with The Writing Squad and Manchester City of Literature, young writers (aged 18-30) will be invited to respond in any written form (e.g. poetry, play, short story, Zine) to themes of either; 1. The House, 2. Social equality in Elizabeth’s writings 3. Elizabeth’s experience as a female writer. The creative outputs will include an exhibition celebrating Elizabeth & The House’s relevance to contemporary life as part of the Festival of Libraries 2025 before transferring to EGH. This project will engage a younger audience with the relevancy of Elizabeth’s works and promote the House via new marketing channels and resources.
