Historic Buildings
A Sustainable Future for Martello Tower 'P'
Martello Tower ‘P,’ the ROC Observation Post (hereafter referred to as ‘the bunker’) and Wireless Green stand as tangible reminders of the historic defensive chain that stretched along the South East coastline. A prominent landmark on Felixstowe's south seafront, the site holds significant untapped heritage potential. The tower is in a vulnerable condition and stands vacant during the year, apart from serving as a Coastwatch lookout. The bunker has never been publicly accessible. This project will build a long-term sustainable plan for the site which will ultimately lead to the assets being in better condition, with enhanced access, increased participation and greater operational viability. A business plan will explore governance / operational models as a heritage destination, whilst an access audit will identify current barriers which limit inclusive engagement. Condition surveys will inform future works and budget planning, and an outline activity plan will shape future engagement providing increased participation.
