Alford Manor House: Saving Miss Higgins’ Legacy

Through this project, the Alford & District Civic Trust aims to safeguard and enhance Alford Manor House, a Grade II* listed building and vital community asset. We will rethatch the failing roof using water reed, as recommended in the 2023 Quinquennial Inspection Report. This will preserve the historic fabric, reduce environmental impact, and secure the building’s usability and insurability. Alongside the physical works, we will deliver new digital interpretation, including a website, digital guide, and enhanced social media. An oral history project will capture local voices and reminiscences which enrich the stories surrounding our collections. These will broaden access and increase engagement. The project is timed to coincide with the Levelling Up Fund capital works, ensuring the Manor House fully reopens as a sustainable, resilient, and welcoming heritage destination. This work honours the legacy of Miss Higgins, who gifted the house to Alford in the 1960s.
