Arthur Berry 100

A large scale, partnership project celebrating the centenary of Stoke-on-Trent’s most famous 20th century artist, Arthur Berry. Painter, playwright, poet &broadcaster, Berry’s work brought local working-class characters &places to life in a way rarely seen before or since. Now we'll bring his legacy& impact to life for young people &communities across the region, providing opportunities for local people to connect with the work of a local historical figure, tell us their memories, rediscover lost works of art, ensure access to archive materials &create a true celebration of North Staffordshire culture that is Berry's work through engaging events. From a Potteries working class community, a disability meant Berry escaped the life of a miner or manual labourer& instead studied at the Burslem School of Art &then the Royal College of Art. We’ll remind people of the scale of his impact across the Potteries, encouraging further engagement &interest this important figure deserves.
