Arundel Museum, Three Villages Project

Arundel Museum would like to establish itself more firmly in the surrounding villages. For many years, the museum has been an invaluable resource for the people of Arundel town, but far less so for the villages in its catchment area. We wish to rectify this, by delving into the history of the villages of Slindon, Bury, and Burpham. We have chosen these villages because each has a unique historical reference point: Slindon, for it's church history, especially Catholic history; Bury, for its associations with Lucy Broadwood and the folk songs she collected in and around the village in the late 1890s and 1900s; and Burpham for its strong literary and artistic associations, including the novelist and engraver, Mervyn Peake, who lived in Burpham for part of his life and is buried in the churchyard. Arundel Museum and its users will benefit immensely from this project, as will the wider community.
