The aim of Malmesbury’s Big Dig is to foster a greater sense of pride and appreciation of Malmesbury’s amazing local heritage, in particular the Anglo Saxon history of the town, through actively engaging people in community archaeological excavations. As with many towns in the past ten years we have grown with many new families and this is an ideal opportunity for recent arrivals and the wider community to collectively participate in uncovering and understanding the importance of the town through all eras of history. This exciting shared experience is key to the improvement of the future of the town as a vibrant place to live in, work in, and visit. The Big Dig will form the cornerstone of and promote the town-wide Athelstan 1100 commemoration of King Athelstan in summer 2024.
