Historic Buildings

Back To The Barracks. A New Chapter.

This project will help preserve The Barracks, a prominent Grade II listed former army building in Newcastle-under-Lyme, by replacing damaged armoury windows that are putting its historic fabric at risk. The new windows will improve energy efficiency, reducing heat loss and supporting the environmental sustainability of the building. Alongside these vital repairs, the project will engage the local community with the building’s varied heritage through a creative programme of inclusive participatory workshops. Activities will explore The Barracks’ history and gather personal stories, memories, photographs and artefacts linked to the building and the many independent businesses that have traded there. Inspired by the site’s unique history and current tenants, including a hat maker and a circus company, both rooted in Newcastle’s cultural past, the project will offer hands-on making and craft-based activities. This creative approach will bring history to life and help people connect meaningfully with the building and its stories.
