Birmingham Queer Archive

The Birmingham Queer Archive will tell the story of Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ heritage from the 1960s to the present day in a newly comprehensive, inclusive and relevant form, assembling new oral histories from local people covering LGBTQ+ lives in Birmingham, focused on first-person, living memory accounts and paying particular emphasis to the previously overlooked accounts of women, POC, trans and non-binary voices. We will present new and refreshed oral histories alongside ephemera and images from Birmingham’s queer social history, presenting the new collection through an accessible and intersectional lens, hosted in an online interactive archive and explored through expert talks and a public exhibition. We will capture an invisible foundational chapter of the heritage of today’s LGBTQ+ Brummies before it is gone for good, help the community to understand themselves and their home better, unite LGBTQ+ Brummies intergenerationally, and make Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ community more visible, more proud and more resilient.
