Byker Community Archive

The aim of the Byker Community Archive project is to bring the former “Photographic Studio” Hobby Room on the Grade II* listed social housing estate in Newcastle upon Tyne back into community use. This 'living' community archive will capture the evolution of the estate over the years, from pre-redevelopment through to the present. It will showcase the unique architectural and design features, as well as capturing and telling the stories of its communities, contributing new narratives and giving people agency over their histories. The archive will be community-led, providing people who live on the estate with volunteering and employment opportunities. It will become a resource for researchers, historians, architects, urban planners and visitors. Overall, the project wants to make Byker a better place to live, improve its reputation and develop community cohesion. The knowledge and confidence gained will empower residents to make informed decisions about their own neighbourhood.
