Castilly Henge: examining, illuminating and sustaining Cornwall’s ancient sacred heart. Dating the site’s phases; establishing whether it contains a stone circle; and ensuring improved management and closer engagement with local communities.

Castilly Henge, a Scheduled Monument, sits in the centre of Cornwall in an underappreciated and deprived area. This project will give neighbouring communities opportunities to participate in activities that will enhance understanding and knowledge of the date and form of this unusual Cornish monument hidden right on their doorsteps. Focusing on community outreach, engagement and volunteering we will raise awareness of the monument and its place within the historic landscape by offering opportunities to schools, education settings, social prescribing organisations, community groups and individuals to actively get their hands dirty at the excavation and learn more about Cornwall’s heritage. The legacy of the project will ensure the site’s long term sustainability by engaging and upskilling local people to help with its ongoing maintenance. For Cornwall Archaeological Society it will strengthen organisational resilience; help consolidate our aims; build partnerships with other heritage organisations; to promote and pursue further ambitious projects.
