Museums And Archives

Connecting people and heritage

Our thriving West Highland Museum is over-capacity and urgently needs transformation. Without it, we risk decline; with it, we secure a dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable future for Lochaber’s heritage. Redevelopment will provide much-needed space for community activities, research, and conservation. More of our nationally significant collections will be displayed and interpretation with Gaelic heritage and culture taking centre-stage. The Museum will become fully accessible to people with mobility, hearing, and visual disabilities for the first time. Upgraded facilities will ensure the wellbeing of visitors, staff, and volunteers, and a new retail area will support long-term sustainability. Around the museum, there will be a new public garden with native flora, woodland and a herbarium promoting wellbeing and connection to nature in the heart of Fort William. This 100-year-old highly esteemed museum can then continue to champion the cultural heritage of Lochaber and the wider Highlands into the future.
