Dorset History Centre: Past Lives, Future Proofed

There has never been a more pressing need for the trusted, authentic voice provided by evidence and lived experience. This £5.6 million project will transform Dorset History Centre into a sustainable, inclusive, and nationally significant archive service. A new repository will secure the long-term preservation of Dorset’s documentary heritage for at least 30 years, while reconfigured and modernised public areas will enhance access, visitor experience, and operational efficiency. The project will deliver a strategic programme to widen participation and representation, initially through partnership with arts and heritage organisations and working with grass-roots organisations representing marginalised communities. Enhanced access to 200 years of Dorset’s extensive Quarter Session court rolls dating from 1709 will open up a major historical resource, while DHC will lead regional knowledge exchange in digital preservation and oral history. Together, these investments will strengthen Dorset’s cultural infrastructure, extend community engagement, and ensure resilient stewardship of the county’s heritage.
