Dunure’s Living Heritage (formerly Dunure Helm)

In partnership with Dynamic Dunure, South Ayrshire Council will protect, connect and enhance Dunure’s extensive built, cultural and natural heritage, safeguarding the unique character of this landmark coastal village, where heritage is central to community identity and very popular with visitors. The project will protect key heritage assets, including Dunure Castle and Dovecot (Scheduled Monument, Category B), B Listed historic early 19th century Harbour and “at risk” light-tower and C listed Limekilns - all within Dunure’s outstanding conservation area. Village-wide capital works and community-led activities will increase heritage participation, make a vital contribution to community cohesion and empowerment, strengthen community pride, and build local heritage skills/capacity. The project will enhance the visitor experience and support sustainable tourism, generating income for ongoing stewardship. With community momentum, significant Council match funding, and urgent conservation needs, this is a vital moment to secure Dunure’s heritage, capture its stories and unlock its potential.
