Connecting Communities with Durham’s Archaeological Heritage will transform the Museum of Archaeology into an inclusive, sustainable space celebrating 10,000 years of Durham’s history. We will revitalise the gallery, improve accessibility and reduce environmental impact, ensuring the museum remains a source of pride for local people. Working with schools, students, volunteers, archaeologists, finders, artists and community groups, we will remove barriers to participation and create opportunities for everyone to engage with Durham’s remarkable archaeology and history. The project will inspire learning and ambition, offering hands-on experience in collections care, conservation and interpretation to develop practical skills and support future careers. Through co-curation and storytelling, we will refresh displays and share underrepresented stories, strengthening community connections. Digital resources and online exhibitions will extend access beyond the gallery. With the museum’s 50th anniversary in 2025, this is a unique opportunity to secure its future and ensure Durham’s past remains relevant for generations.
