Founding Cara-Friend: Preserving At Risk LGBTQIA+ Heritage
The aim of our project is to secure, preserve and share heritage which is important to the LGBTQIA+ community in Northern Ireland, which we have identified as being at risk. The project aims to do this by engaging with older members of the LGBTQIA+ community who founded Cara-Friend in 1974, or volunteered in the 70s and 80s, whose stories are at risk of being lost. Cara-Friend has identified 23 surviving individuals who have agreed to be part of this project. The project aims to capture their stories and recognise their contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community. The heritage collected and preserved through this project will be made freely available and used to educate both our own community and wider society about the heritage of Cara-Friend as Northern Ireland's oldest LGBTQIA+ charitable organisation.
