From Beacon to Folly: Access to Archaeology Scheme

It is our intention to create an access to archaeology initiative, which aims to make archaeology more accessible and inclusive; creating opportunities for an introduction to the discipline, which promotes both multi-cultural participation, while also encouraging participation from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. That there is a need for such a scheme is reflected by the overwhelmingly Caucasian workforce of professionals working in archaeology. The situation is much the same at university study. Indeed, a study completed in 2013 found that: '99.2 percent of paid archaeology staff and 97 percent of volunteers identified as white.' Since the local population of the Harrow area is 63.8% BME - having the third largest Indian population in the UK - we believe we are in a good position to influence and encourage more diversity.
