Going Underground - Accessing Tyldesley's Unique Hidden Heritage

This proposal supports our project to develop a key building in Tyldesley Town centre which has been in community use from 1903 until 2022 offering, education, community benefits, heritage and opportunities for local enterprises and secures a key heritage building. The building continues the Tyldesley Heritage Action Zone which attracted substantial government funding, being a unique community led programme, which over four years engaged extensively with local residents increasing support for and awareness of heritage in Tyldesley. The building is vacant and will be brought into use under the control of a local community organisation and will broaden local access to heritage. The building will generate income supplemented by approved revenue grants and will be therefore be sustainable. It has secured £317,000 of grant funding already. The building forms a hub linking major public transport/ walking and cycling initiatives and lies adjacent to Astley Park, itself over 120 years old.
