Grounds for Appeal: First World War Military Service Appeal Tribunals in Great Britain

This project presents multi-faceted opportunity to protect and preserve rare surviving heritage, to engage a range of audiences with untold stories, and to develop innovative partnership working for the archive sector. Records of WWI military service tribunals held at 15 archives across England and Wales will become more accessible through the creation of a national, searchable database which will enable detailed analysis for a multitude of purposes, and inspire a range of outreach activities. Further to insights gained from a comparative analysis of the dataset produced during the course of project, the legacy for the project includes the ongoing research opportunities for future academic and general research enabled by the national database, the benefits to emotional and mental wellbeing engendered in volunteers and participants in the project, and will also provide a case study to inspire and encourage future partnership work involving multiple archive services across England and Wales.
