Museums And Archives
The lost country houses and associated estates, which once dotted Norfolk’s landscape, have left their marks on our rural and urban landscapes. Their demise and legacy provoke an ongoing fascination, as evidenced by Tom Williamson and others’, Lost Country Houses of Norfolk (Boydell Press, 2022) and are integral to our understanding of our local area. Most of us live on land which once belonged to these large, landed estates. Their stories are told amidst archives, photographs, maps, sound recordings, local memories, and the landscape. Led by the Norfolk Record Office (NRO), the Hall Marks project will seek to uncover these stories through work with individuals and volunteers. The project will help people develop new skills on researching local history, encourage people to actively explore the landscape, including its flora and fauna, and improve public access to key historical sources. The focus for this will be tithe maps and their apportionments.
