Many schools are finding it increasingly difficult to fund heritage activities, especially when such activities involve entrance fees and travel costs. We have identified schools in Hampshire, (many in the Portsmouth area, a city with high levels of deprivation) where this situation is particularly acute. We will work in partnership with eight Hampshire primary schools, to deliver a programme of learning about the heritage of the South Downs. This will include in-school workshops, field trips, and visit to local heritage outdoor museums, all recognised nationally for their high quality and exceptional learning programmes for schools, these include the Weald and Downland Museum, Butser Ancient Farm, and Gilbert White House and Gardens. Schools have made it clear to us that our support and funding is essential if they are to access these learning opportunities. Working with a mental health charity, we will ensure children fully benefit from the Hampshire Downs experience.
