Haverfordwest Castle: Pembrokeshire's Heritage Gateway

The project unlocks the untapped potential of medieval Haverfordwest Castle, a barely visited scheduled monument within the county town. We will create a new, exciting flagship wet weather heritage attraction for Pembrokeshire within its two Georgian buildings (incorporating a refitted and updated town museum). This inspiring gateway to Pembrokeshire’s rich, varied heritage will be designed to appeal to local people, the county’s 6.6m annual tourists, and its large school-age population. It will attract 40,000 visitors annually on a sustained basis. The castle’s open-access areas will be revitalised with café and shop facilities, and new site interpretation. Its precious ecology and biodiversity will be enhanced and interpretated. Haverfordwest castle will fulfil a placemaking, regenerative role as the renewed focal point for local pride and identity, creating multiple opportunities for transformative engagement with priority local audiences through activities programming, volunteering and supported employment in a town dealing with severe socio-economic and wellbeing challenges.
