The aim of this project is to celebrate the life and work of Charles Fraser-Mackintosh (1828-1901), a lawyer, property developer and parliamentarian who played a key role in shaping both the modern townscape of Inverness and the cultural identity of the Highlands. Despite the importance of his enduring contributions to the landscape and communities of the Highlands and Inverness he remains largely unknown. The project will celebrate the150 year anniversary of Fraser-Mackintosh’s publication of Invernessiana in 1875, a book of ‘contributions toward a history of the town and parish of Inverness from 1160 to 1599’. It will also coincide with the re-opening of Inverness Castle as a new visitor attraction in 2025 - a fitting way and appropriate time to celebrate the heritage of Inverness through Fraser-Mackintosh and this collection. In turn this contributes to a preservation of this heritage, increasing accessibility of the collection and engaging with new audiences.
