Historic Buildings
We wish to open a pilot excavation in Jarrow, using mapping obtained through geophysics and landscape surveys on the surroundings of St Paul's Monastery, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Country, adding to Jarrow Hall museums permanent collection and telling a missing part of our story. We will; *Engage local communities and create inclusive opportunities for participants, volunteers and students to access practical workshops, reaching a wider audience, including archaeology on prescription to improve wellbeing. *Ensure activities are relevant to local people/groups and empower disadvantaged individuals to access vocational training, Level 3 Certificate in Archaeological Practice, removing barriers for future archaeological careers and raising aspirations. *Save heritage/record archaeology from inevitable damage and/or permanent loss, caused by the position of the nearby riverside. *Build staff and volunteer skills, expertise and confidence in opening and operating an archaeological excavation, building resilience and strengthening partnerships, including academic institutions.
