Journeys: A National Engagement Project for Mai by Joshua Reynolds

With this national tour of Mai (Omai) by Sir Joshua Reynolds, we will transform this historic work of art into a living narrative, shaped by contemporary perspectives. We will make Mai relevant and accessible to new generations by connecting its themes of youth, adventure, colonial histories, climate change and identity to contemporary discussion, while engaging its complex heritage. Collaborating with partner venues, we will support and empower young people to explore and personalise its complex themes. Youth voice and fresh interpretations will result in displays, artistic commissions, and educational resources that explore colonial histories and other themes. The project’s legacy will be new audiences and contemporary readings for Mai. These will be enriched through diverse perspectives; and shared through lasting educational resources that make Mai accessible beyond the life of the project. This will ensure it continues to excite conversations about history, identity, and belonging now and into the future.
