Killean, Kilchenzie and Kilkivan Churches Conservation Project Phase 1 Emergency Works

Killean and Kilchenzie Churches Preservation Association(KKCPA) and Laggan Opportunity and Amenity Fund (LOAF) propose a major project for the conservation and promotion of medieval churches in Killean, Kilchenzie and Kilkivan in Kintyre. All three churches are SAMs and contain collections of medieval West Highland Graveslabs known for their intricate carvings. The overall aim of the project is to create a Medieval Kintyre Trail to educate and promote Kintyre history, as well as provide a tourist attraction. The scheme for the conservation of the churches is being prepared. However, the recently carried out condition assessment identified areas of extensive decay that threatened historic fabric and put the public at risk. This application is related to the recommended Emergency Phase of Works, which will deal with the imminent risks to the historic fabric until the funding for the main conservation project is obtained.
