"Lit & Phil Open"

Since 1793, the Lit & Phil has provided a place where local people, fired by intellectual curiosity, can meet and learn from each other and the wider world. "Lit & Phil Open" aims to open up this heritage, enabling a wider audience to learn and engage - we want to double our physical and virtual community within 5 years. To do this, our 200-year-old listed library will be made accessible and welcoming - a place to read and a venue for more, and more diverse, activities. A programme of conserving and interpreting the collections and building will transform understanding of that heritage. Working with disability, cultural and community organisations, we will learn from under-represented audiences how they want to engage with our common heritage, and involve them as participants in understanding that heritage. Growing those activities and audiences will sustain the precious heritage and its host building, for now and into the future.
