Mackintosh at the Willow: acquisition to operation
In January 2024, National Trust for Scotland (NTS) completed the legal acquisition of Mackintosh at the Willow (MaW) - an outstanding example of an artistic Glasgow tearoom designed by architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.?? The acquisition was essential to safeguard the property’s future. The previous operator, Willow Tea Rooms Trust (WTRT), was at?significant risk of entering administration, risking redundancies and the forced sale of MaW, its collection, and intricately restored interiors. This project will deliver the next phase of work to transition MaW into the NTS estate. We will ensure continuity of operations as a centre of excellence for heritage engagement, while delivering immediate priorities identified during acquisition to fully integrate with the Trust’s systems and standards. The business model will be strengthened by growing our core audience and attracting new visitors, with revised branding and communications emphasising MaW’s position as the highest quality and authentic Mackintosh experience in Glasgow.
