NESS OF BRODGAR: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

For the past 20 years, excavations at the Ness of Brodgar have placed a priority on the involvement of local communities, volunteers and visitors. Encouraging public engagement within and beyond Orkney’s shores, our work has boosted the local economy and brought in many national and international awards. However, our fieldwork ends this summer (2024). As the post-excavation phase of the project begins, we want to ensure the continued importance of this remarkable Neolithic site as a focus for heritage tourism. We also want to extend our regional impact through formal and informal training programmes, a sustainable package of schools resources and a wide range of community-based workshops. Many of these resources will be delivered in the field, the classroom and the lab; in teaching packs and related materials. Others will be accessed via a dedicated open-access website aimed at several different communities of interest, both local and international.
