Potted History: The Barnstaple Excavations Publication Project

We aim to fulfill our responsibilities to the public, our region’s heritage and the international archaeological community by completing the post-excavation and publication of the material evidence excavated in Barnstaple during the 1970s and 1980s, including three 17th c kilns, the source of North Devon’s early trade with the Americas The project will: Complete the analysis of 14 excavations and publish detailed digital reports, specialist publications and a public-focused overview. Reduce the volume of stored finds by over 50% and digitise written and photographic records to create an accessible and sustainable archive. Train volunteers and archaeologists in post-excavation techniques and North Devon pottery types, increasing skills and resources for those working with North Devon ceramic finds. Increase public interest, understanding and sense of place, including through creative work with local ceramic artists to share our region’s historic pottery skills
