Preparing to Launch

The aim of this project is to gather strategic information, strengthen stakeholder relationships and build greater public awareness of Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives (THLHLA) in Stepney, East London, in order to support capital fundraising. This Grade II listed building is home to extensive, priceless and unique collections which document centuries of history in the borough of Tower Hamlets and its communities. However, the large Victorian building we occupy has been added to the 2026 ‘At Risk’ Register by Historic England due to its increasing deterioration. Our Accredited Archive status is also at risk due to poor collections storage facilities. The Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets has directed officers to carry out fundraising, offering £1m from the council towards it when external funding has been secured. Conversations with NLHF staff have led us to develop this application to ensure we can make the strongest possible development phase application.
