Queering North East History

Queering North East History (QNEH) will create a step change in how LGBTQIA+ heritage is understood, preserved, and shared in the North East. It will build a more inclusive and resilient heritage sector by increasing institutional confidence, knowledge, and commitment to representing LGBTQIA+ histories. Through community archiving, the project will empower LGBTQIA+ people to participate and see their lives reflected in heritage spaces, address historic erasure, and foster intergenerational understanding. These activities will diversify valued and preserved narratives. A dynamic digital archive will remove barriers to access, ensuring that LGBTQIA+ heritage is visible, discoverable, and meaningful to a wide audience long after the project ends. Public-facing events will shift perceptions, deepen public understanding, and spark wider recognition of LGBTQIA+ people as integral to regional history. Together, QNEH’s outcomes will embed inclusive practice, enrich the historical record, and place the North East at the forefront of queer heritage work nationally.
