Historic Buildings

Reading, Writing, Restoration: Bushmills' Old School Project

The Bushmills Trust seeks to revitalise and restore the former National School building, a historic landmark within the village of Bushmills. Our project aims to breathe new life into this derelict structure, transforming it into a vibrant community hub and cultural asset. By undertaking comprehensive restoration efforts, we envision preserving the rich heritage of the building while also repurposing it to serve the evolving needs of our community. Through this project, we aspire to create a welcoming and inclusive space that fosters community engagement, social cohesion, and economic empowerment. By providing accessible facilities for community gatherings, events, and educational activities, we aim to strengthen community bonds and promote local talent and creativity. Furthermore, by strategically reconfiguring the site and establishing linkages with adjacent areas such as Dundarave estate and the village centre, we seek to break down barriers and enhance connectivity within our community. Our project aligns with broader efforts to address social and economic challenges, particularly in areas with high levels of deprivation, by offering opportunities for skill development, enterprise, and cultural enrichment. Ultimately, our vision is for the restored National School building to serve as a beacon of heritage, community pride, and opportunity in Bushmills, contributing to the sustainable development and well-being of our village for generations to come.
