Relocating Amber

Relocating Amber will secure and activate the AmberSide Collection as a world-class living record ofworking-class and post-industrial life in the North East and beyond. The project begins partnerships tosafeguard the physical Collection through storage at Newcastle University Special Collections, whileestablishing a region-wide model of access rooted in long-term education and participation projects. Rather than relying on a single venue, heritage will be shared across regional spaces. Archive-ledlearning will deepen engagement within primary schools, alongside new practitioner development andtraining opportunities. Community members will contribute knowledge and creative responses, ensuringthe archive continues to grow through lived experience and intergenerational exchange. By embedding equity, partnership and shared stewardship, Relocating Amber will leave a resilientorganisation, a protected and better-used film and photography collection, and a sustainable regionaleducation and exhibition programme that is actively taught, shaped and valued by the communitieswhose histories it holds.
