The O’Neill Chalice is a rare 17th-century Franciscan liturgical object from the time of religious suppression in Ireland. Its hand-inscribed base links it directly to Fr Paul O’Neill (Guardian, 1629) and the convent at Carrickfergus. Despite its significance, the chalice has not been conserved and is at risk of further deterioration due to metal corrosion and historic damage. The heritage it represents—hidden, persecuted faith—is not currently interpreted for the public. Its story, discovered and researched through parish and historical sources, has the potential to inspire local schools, historians, and community groups. There is also an opportunity to reclaim an overgrown area between the church and primary school to create a heritage garden, linking nature with Franciscan spirituality and enhancing public access and learning.
