Sankofa Resilience

Sankofa, an Akan word from Ghana, meaning ‘to go back and get it’, encourages us to learn from the past and use that knowledge to move forward. This centres both Black Cultural Archives’ mission and the aims of this project. While great progress has been made over the last 10 years in BCA’s development to fully realise its potential as a pioneering and impactful resource for alternative frameworks in archiving and community engagement in the UK and internationally, urgent transformational improvements are required in both the policies and strategic planning of its core programmes (Collections Management; Learning Programmes; and Exhibitions and Events). Current suboptimal plans and staffing resources put BCA’s sustainability at serious risk. Through this project, we will develop strategic plans that are operationally resilient, key to realising the full potential of BCA’s unique collections on Black British history and in mobilising the support required to secure BCA’s future.
