Save our Spire

The spire at St Mary’s Whitchurch-on-Thames is a landmark in our village, much-loved locally, visible as part of the Thames scenescape to river users, and frequently visited by tourists. The spire was originally installed in 1858 and still has the original cedar shingles. We were first advised that the shingles would eventually need replacement in 2007 and this is now needed urgently. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is responsible for the church fabric and plans to use the project of replacing the shingles to raise the profile of our historic church both within the local community and with visitors. The church is already used by various village groups beyond our congregation, but the project will allow us to enhance our engagement particularly with schools and with visitors walking long distance paths, thereby creating a lasting legacy. We will enhance the welcome and resources we provide and develop an online presence.
