Saving Halberton's Ancient Roman Environment (SHARE)

The aim of Saving Halberton’s Ancient Roman Environment (SHARE) is to rescue the Roman villa complex at Battens Farm by recording it through excavation, before crucial evidence is lost due to ploughing. These excavations will form the core of a five-year community project that will ‘SHARE’ the archaeological process with people in the local area who are not normally engaged in heritage. The project is a partnership between University of Exeter (UofE), Devon County Council (DCC), Tiverton Archaeology Group (TAG) and Sampford Peverell Society (SPS), and will involve a commercial archaeology contractor. We want to inspire and bring social benefit to local people by involving them in archaeology, through a targeted cross-generational volunteer programme, open days and events, workshops for those with mental health difficulties and an education programme. The project will ensure the longevity and resilience of the two local societies, enabling them to lead similar projects in future.
