Securing the Future of Norman Cross Depot Scheduled Monument - Fast Track Application
Due to Historic England (HE) funding deadlines, we humbly request this application is fast-tracked. Nene Park Trust, a registered charity, sustainably manages 914 hectares of greenspace across Peterborough, including several historical landmarks and archaeological remains for public benefit. We are requesting funding to purchase and 'relaunch' Norman Cross Depot (Scheduled Monument Entry 1006782), a historically significant site near Peterborough. Established in 1797 during the Napoleonic Wars, it was the world’s first purpose-built prisoner-of-war camp. However, recent sale and potential housing development threatens its future. Supported by HE, we have been offered the land by private sale. Confident we have secured 80% of purchase costs from HE, we are requesting £49,800 to complete the purchase and relaunch the site. This will enable us to conserve the site, protect its historic landscape, ensure public access and collaborate with experts to uncover and tell its story, preserving Norman Cross for generations to come.
