Museums And Archives

Shining a Light - Developing and making accessible 37 years of visual practice by Black artists at 198

Our project builds the infrastructure and accessibility of 198's archive which holds material relating to the work of 198 CAL since 1988 as well as at-risk VHS and Betamax footage by Clovis Salmon MBE that documents the history of Brixton's Black community. These materials preserve the artistic contributions of marginalised communities and serve as documentation of community activism over four decades. They are an important educational resource and cultural touchstone for diverse audiences supporting diversity and inclusion in the arts and heritage sectors. The project promotes accessibility through the digitisation of heritage at risk and the creation of an online archive, complemented by physical resources. Opportunities will be provided for skills development and community empowerment by training volunteers in archival practices, accredited digital skills and activities to support career progression. Cultural and organisational resilience will be supported through strengthened archival infrastructure and management practices to attract new partnerships and opportunities.
