Shoeburyness Cart & Wagon Shed

Few people visiting Shoeburyness realise the rich and internationally significant history it has. The Cart and Wagon Shed is part of the historic fabric of the area and will continue to develop as the key heritage interpretation, community hub and wider wayfinding centre for visitors. This project will provide exhibitions, activities and events linked to the environment, early human settlements since prehistoric times (including Iron Age, Romans, Saxons, Danes), and the Shoebury Garrison (which became the British military’s main weapons development and testing site, replacing Woolwich after 1840 and playing host to many technical innovations by, for example, Whitworth and Armstrong). The Shed will provide opportunities for volunteering, learning new skills and community cohesion. It will build pride in place, assist in health and wellbeing and provide opportunities for work experience and skills development. The Shed will also attract visitors to the area helping to enhance the local economy.
