Soldiers from the Sky
Lincolnshire is widely known as ‘Bomber Country’ highlighting the role that county aviation played in WW2. Across South Kesteven (southwest Lincolnshire), however, there is a uniquely different but complementary story to tell: how airborne soldiers of three nations - Britain, America and Poland – came together during 1944 in preparation for iconic battles changing the course of WW2. To commemorate the 80th anniversaries of Operation Overlord (D-Day) and Market Garden (Arnhem), South Kesteven District Council will collaborate with visitor sites, volunteers, schools, businesses and residents to create a physical and digital trail identifying and celebrating the district’s role in preparation for pivotal battles, capturing backstories before they pass from living memory. By making these stories accessible and relevant to new audiences we will enhance public, community, volunteer and stakeholder engagement and awareness, strengthen the visitor offer and unite communities through pride in a shared heritage, ensuring a lasting commemorative legacy.
