St Benedicts Church, Gyffin - our heritage / Eglwys Sant Bened, Gyffin - ein treftadaeth

St Benedict’s, a Grade 1 building described as "a hidden gem”, cries out to be revealed for the treasure it is. We want to share its place in history but also its tranquility: a place of reflection, where one can be listened to or be close to nature in the churchyard. Yet it can be transformed to a lively, flexible space belonging to the community and local schools. Our project aims to achieve this transformation. Currently lacking facilities for visitors and wheelchair access, we wish to provide the amenities to open it to all. To explain its unique historical treasures: the C16th painted chancel ceiling; a C13th stone inscribed “Llywelyn ab Iorwerth lies here” (first Prince of Wales), whose tomb was evicted from Aberconwy Abbey (Conwy Castle) by Edward 1; the medieval porch door with C17th graffiti; the C13th font with links to the translation of the Welsh New Testament.
