Historic Buildings
For over 800 years, St George Colegate has been a focal point for worship and community life. The church’s fabric, monuments and interior reflect this long history, shaped by generations who lived and worshipped in Norwich-over-the-Water. Today, structural problems affecting the medieval roof, alongside outdated facilities, threaten the church’s ability to remain in use. The project will repair and renew the building so it can reopen daily for the public to visit, while continuing to support ongoing worship and community activities that provide welcome, warmth and connection. Improvements to access, comfort and flexibility will enable new community, heritage, cultural and learning activities, alongside more welcoming use of the churchyard as a rare, valued green space in this part of the city. The legacy will be an open, active and well cared for church, valued locally and an important part of Norwich’s outstanding medieval church heritage.
