St Ives Huers Hut – Restoration, Interpretation & Sustainable Reuse

The St Ives Huers Hut is a rare surviving link to the former fishing industry that sustained St Ives for centuries. A plaque on the building briefly highlights its historic significance and is rated as having ‘high importance and rarity on a national scale with limited potential for substitution’ [Cornwall Council Archaeological Assessment Unit]. The building is declining, and essential works are required to safeguard both the physical structure and its heritage for future generations. Situated on the coast path, it’s challenging location and previous reactive approach to its management means that the building has remained vacant. Without vision or a sustainable use, it remains at risk in the long term, as modern development encroaches around it. The Council’s plans will seek sensitive restoration and repair with improved access to interpretation, sharing the rich history and high heritage value of the Huers Hut to a far wider audience.
