St Martin’s Bulmer - Stone and Story

For at least one thousand years the people of Bulmer have gathered on the site of St. Martin’s Church: mentioned in the Domesday Book as Bolemere, surviving church masonry with its herringbone pattern and roughly cut wide joined work, is a style associated with Saxon or Danish builders. This project will secure the long term future of this rare and historic building, saving its heritage through the conservation and restoration of the 14th century tower; protecting the environment by stopping water ingress, thereby improving the building’s thermal efficiency; improving inclusion, access and participation by breaking down the barriers which prevent people coming to explore and learn about the church's heritage; and improving the organisation’s sustainability by enabling the building to be used for wider community activities, improve the visitor welcome, and strengthening links with Bulmer Local History Society, Castle Howard Estate, Sheriff Hutton Castle, and York University’s Archaeology Department.
