St Michael: The Church in the Market Place

Through this project, St Michael’s PCC aims to safeguard the historic fabric of the church in Malton, North Yorkshire, celebrating its religious heritage and strengthening its role within the town. The conservation works will protect the clerestory, roof, windows, and internal plasterwork, ensuring the survival of the church’s historic character and medieval craftsmanship. Alongside these repairs, the project will raise awareness of the church’s heritage, including its monuments, Victorian stained glass, and architectural features, making them accessible to a wider audience through research, interpretation, and digital resources. This project represents a first phase in securing the long-term use of the church as a place of worship, community, and welcome to all. By fostering engagement and inclusion through multilingual welcome guides, school resources, handling materials, and opportunities to witness conservation in action, the project supports good stewardship and helps embed the church as a valued spiritual, historic, educational, and cultural asset.
