Historic Buildings

St Monans Auld Kirk

This landmark A- listed Medieval building on Fife’s spectacular rugged coastline, will become an inclusive, welcoming community-run heritage destination. By restoring access to the Kirk, locals, coastal path walkers, visitors and pilgrims can refuel and connect with its spectacular setting and unique stories. Innovative heritage interpretation will connect people with the Kirk’s history, from its founding by King David II following a miraculous rescue at sea, to its role as a monastery and important stop on Fife’s mediaeval pilgrimage route - as well as a spell as a stable for Oliver Cromwell’s horses and a darker role in the lives of those accused of Witchcraft in the 17th century. The building fabric, dating from c.1367 onward, will be carefully repaired, with climate- responsive upgrades and accessibility improvements prioritised. This will safeguard the building for full, productive and inclusive use as an economic and social safeguard for the village of St Monans.
