Historic Buildings

St Peter’s Horningsea: From beneath the floor to the top of the tower.

We aim to achieve a church that is safe for everyone to use, by repairing the floor in the North Aisle where it has collapsed. The unsafe floor means that currently the church cannot safely be used by the community for concerts, talks, exhibitions, cinema shows or by the church congregation. Two 10th Century tomb lids are embedded in Victorian tiles which are deteriorating due to the damp so they need to be preserved. The second limb is to make access to the Tower safe for those who need to use it including the Bell Ringers to maintain the bells, the servicing of the lightening conductor and roof alarm. Occasional access is required in respect of the bats which roost in the Tower and the birds who can get trapped in the Tower. We will then celebrate the completed repairs by offering a special programme of community activities
