Stronafian Heritage Interpretation Project (SHIP)

The local community own Stronafian forest which lies upon the hill slopes of Glendaruel. They want to take the lead in understanding the historical assets they now care for within the forest, for themselves and for visitors to the sites. These historical assets include two main sites: Firstly, Auchategan which has been inhabited for at least six periods from early Neolithic to the 18th century; Secondly, the nearby chambered cairn of Lephinkil, which was built over hundreds of years within Neolithic times. At both sites, all that remains are mounds of turf, stones, and slabs. Although we have some idea of what lies beneath the ground from past excavations and investigations, it is difficult for us to imagine the structures our predecessors used and how these supported their daily lives compared to ours. This project aims to provide digital visualisation interpretation of the two sites which is accessible to all.
