Historic Buildings

The Church in a Changing Landscape

This project will help St Thomas’s church take steps in preserving, understanding and sharing its unique history of inclusion. The project will engage the local community in recording its oral history, resulting in a creative and intergenerational celebration of local heritage, which will provide building blocks for community cohesion and identity. The project will engage new audiences, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community, people experiencing mental health issues, pupils from local school, and the Roman Catholic community of York, and celebrate their unique contributions to the local heritage. The church seeks to halt water damage to the church building, which is central to preserving the physical element of the local heritage. The legacy of this project will be a well thought through vision for the preservation and interpretation of the church's radical LGBTQ+ and ecumenical heritage, which may be used as the basis for future funding bids.
